An independent film by Hank Janzen
The Story:
So, How You Been? unfolds over the course of one long evening. Coy, a recent college graduate, invites a few old friends over for dinner in what is meant to be a relaxed reunion. In reality, the night is something closer to an emotional obstacle course.
Coy has spent the past year trying to move forward with his life, though the evidence of that progress is… debatable. When his friends arrive, he does his best to present the image of someone who has everything under control: a stable job, exciting opportunities on the horizon, and absolutely no lingering feelings about the past.
Unfortunately, the people sitting around the table know him far too well for that performance to go smoothly.
At the center of the evening is Coy’s uneasy dynamic with Vince. The two share a complicated history, and while Vince seems genuinely eager to clear the air, Coy would strongly prefer that the air remain completely uncleared. As the night unfolds, Vince repeatedly attempts to start the conversation Coy has been avoiding, creating a quiet tension that lingers beneath the group’s jokes, drinks, and awkward small talk.
The story finds humor in the uncomfortable spaces between people who used to know each other intimately but have slowly drifted apart. Simple moments take on outsized importance: a carefully chosen bottle of wine meant to impress an old girlfriend, a casual question about someone’s career, or an offhand comment that accidentally pokes at a sensitive memory.
As the night continues, Coy’s carefully curated image begins to show small cracks. The more he tries to control the evening, the more unpredictable it becomes. Conversations veer off course, minor embarrassments spiral into bigger ones, and the polite reunion Coy imagined slowly transforms into something far messier and far more honest.
Despite the awkwardness, the film approaches its characters with warmth and humor. Each of them is navigating the strange space between college and adulthood, where expectations collide with reality and everyone is quietly trying to figure out what they are doing with their lives.
At its heart, So, How You Been? is about the uncomfortable, funny, and sometimes painful process of reconnecting with people who remember exactly who you used to be.
